Types of Rollerblades

Rollerblade is a registered trade mark or brand name for inline skates. Inline skates are roller skates with four or five wheels in a single row from heel to toe. They consist of a boot, frame (runners), wheels and bearings, and they are designed to provide you with speed and quick turns, mimicking ice skates. The type of Rollerblade you purchase is based on what type of skating you plan to participate in the most.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHistory

The first known pair of roller skates were inline skates created in 1716. In the 1820s a form of in-line skate called Rolito was created. Inline skates remained the only type of skate until James Pemberton invented a skate with four wheels in 1863, two in the back and two in the front. The four-wheel skate or quad skate became very popular and the inline skate was used primarily for ice skating training. It was not very popular with the general population. However, the Chicago Roller Skating Company designed a pair of inline skates in 1866, and in 1980 two brothers Scott and Brennan Olsen used one of these old inline skates to create a new model under the name of Rollerblade Inc. The Rollerblade brand name became very popular in 1984 when the company was brought out and the skate was strategically marketed in California.

There are several main types of Rollerblades. They include multipurpose, hockey and speed skates. Multipurpose is composed of a plastic boot, foam liner, plastic frame and wheels. Hockey skates are an upgraded model of the multipurpose skate with some aluminum alloy in the frame. Speed skates or racing skates have five wheels, are made of leather and are low cut. The frames may be made of aluminum alloy or fiber glass carbon/fiber types of material. Most speed skates have to be special ordered. You can find them in a component skate (separate boot, frame, wheels) or a manufactured skate (one piece).

You can use multipurpose rollerblades for exercising, training, recreational and aggressive skating. Aggressive skating or street skating is the more popular form of multipurpose skating used today. Rollerblades for aggressive use come with grind plates, smaller wheels and rugged shells to assist you with the skating tricks you will perform. Hockey Rollerblades may have side plates to protect the leather when you fall. You will find that they may not be suitable for outdoor use. Speed Rollerblades get their speed from the extra length of the wheel base. It makes the skates more stable at higher speeds.

The boot part of a racing Rollerblade can be acquired as a separate component. When purchased as a separate component it may be heat moldable, meaning you can heat the boots up and mold them to your feet for a better fit. They come in styles that are partially or fully moldable. Fitting boots to your feet conserves energy and helps you get a better feel for the road.

Wear a skate helmet that protects the back of the head and fits, along with wrist guards, elbow pads and knee pads. See Resources below for more detail.
